Our Amazon jungle tours are built for travelers who want more than a boat ride past the treeline. Led by local naturalist guides, each journey takes you into one of Peru’s two major protected reserves, depending on which gateway you choose.
From Iquitos, most tours head into Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area and known locally as “the jungle of mirrors” for the way its dark waters reflect the canopy above. It’s a flooded forest best explored by boat, and the main way to see it in depth is a multi-day river cruise or an extended lodge stay.
From Puerto Maldonado, tours typically head into Tambopata National Reserve, known for its macaw clay licks, where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather at the riverbank, and for genuinely good odds of spotting wildlife most travelers never see, including jaguar sightings reported by roughly 1 in 5 visitors at some of the reserve’s more remote lodges.
Whether you’re watching pink river dolphins at sunrise or listening to the forest wake up at night from an eco-lodge deep in the reserve, this is the Amazon experienced on its own terms, not from the edge of it.
Iquitos is the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road, accessible only by plane or boat. Located in northeastern Peru, it sits deep within the Amazon Basin, the ecosystem that, across all nine countries it spans, is home to an estimated 390 billion individual trees and around 16,000 tree species, more than any other rainforest on Earth.
The stretch of Amazon reachable from Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado holds its own share of that diversity: thousands of plant species, hundreds of bird species, and wildlife found almost nowhere else, from pink river dolphins to the giant river otter, one of the rainforest’s most endangered mammals.
New species are still being identified here every year, and researchers estimate that countless more remain undocumented, making it one of the richest and least fully understood ecosystems on the planet.
