Lima: History, Markets, and the Kitchen of South America
Your journey begins in Lima with two days that do the city justice. A guided historic city tour covers the UNESCO-listed city center – the grand Plaza Mayor, the ornate Cathedral, and the baroque colonial quarter that reveals Lima’s centuries of history. The afternoon shifts to Lima’s greatest modern achievement: its food. A culinary tour through local markets, street stalls, and celebrated restaurants introduces you to Peruvian cuisine – ceviche, causa, anticuchos, pisco sour – and sets the tone for a journey where every meal carries meaning.
Paracas, Pisco & Huacachina: Peru’s Desert Coast
The journey south reveals a Peru most visitors never see. A morning at Paracas National Reserve puts you in one of South America’s most dramatic coastal landscapes – towering red cliffs, turquoise Pacific waters, and resident flamingos along the shoreline. The following day takes you to one of Peru’s most ancient pisco distilleries for a tasting of the country’s national spirit, before the afternoon delivers one of the trip’s most exhilarating moments: Huacachina, a desert oasis ringed by South America’s highest sand dunes, explored by dune buggy and sandboard as the sun drops behind the horizon.
Sacred Valley: Horses, Salt, and Living Andean Tradition
Rather than heading straight into Cusco, your journey eases into the highlands with a stay at a mountain view lodge in the Sacred Valley – ideal for acclimatization and genuinely beautiful. A morning horseback ride through the Maras countryside gives you a perspective on the landscape that no road can offer, before arriving at the Moray terraces – the Inca’s circular open-air agricultural laboratory. The afternoon connects you directly with local Andean communities, where traditional textile and farming traditions are still practiced daily. The following day begins at Pisac – first the Inca ruins above the valley, then the colorful artisan market below – before continuing to Ollantaytambo and boarding the scenic train into the cloud forest toward Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu at Sunrise
Few experiences in Peru match Machu Picchu at first light. An early ascent puts you at the citadel as the mist lifts and the morning sun catches the stonework – the ruins nearly to yourself before the day-trippers arrive. Your licensed guide brings the architecture, astronomy, and Inca history fully to life across a private guided tour of the site’s most significant areas. After time to explore at your own pace, you return to Cusco for a free morning and a relaxed afternoon city tour – Koricancha, the Plaza de Armas, Sacsayhuaman, and the artisan streets of San Blas.
Rainbow Mountain: Above the Clouds
Day 10 is one of the trip’s great physical rewards. An early start takes you high into the Andes for the hike to Vinicunca – Rainbow Mountain – its mineral-streaked slopes of red, gold, and purple revealing themselves as you crest the ridge. Our timing puts you at the summit ahead of the main crowds, with the high-altitude silence and a horizon of Andean peaks entirely to yourself. Llamas and alpacas graze the slopes on the way down, and the scale of what surrounds you stays with you long after.
The Amazon Jungle: Wildlife, Rivers, and Rainforest
The final chapter takes you somewhere entirely different. A flight to Puerto Maldonado drops you into the gateway of the Peruvian Amazon, where three days at a private jungle lodge immerse you in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Guided walks through primary rainforest, early morning wildlife spotting, canoe trips along forest rivers, and evenings alive with the sounds of the jungle offer a closing experience that puts everything that came before it into a broader natural context. Peru is far larger than its ruins – and this is where that truth lands fully. Explore our 2-week Peru tour packages to discover more expertly crafted itineraries that showcase the country’s incredible diversity, from the Andes and Amazon to the Pacific coast.
