Choose island hopping if you want the lowest price, like active days and prefer a hotel bed and evenings in a harbor town. Speedboat transfers between islands can be bumpy, especially from June to November, and you pack up more often. The 5-day tour starts from USD 1,620; park fee and transit card are paid on top.
Choose a cruise if you want to reach remote islands such as Genovesa, unpack once and have meals, guiding and landings organized for you. Walks are light to moderate, on sand, rocky trails and lava. The 5-day luxury cruise starts from USD 5,759, and its inclusions list the national park site entrance fees on the itinerary.
Choose a combination if this is your one trip to South America. 10 days is the minimum to do both without rushing; travelers over 60 or anyone who wants rest days should look at the 14-day Peru and Galapagos tour for seniors, which goes to the Sacred Valley before Cusco to ease into the altitude.
When to go. December to May is the warm season, with calmer seas and air in the 80s °F (26 to 30 °C), good for snorkeling without a heavy wetsuit. June to November is cooler and drier, with choppier water and a wetsuit needed, but it is the best time for penguins, sea lion pups and seabird courtship. The Galapagos is a year-round destination; the Peruvian Andes are driest roughly from May to September, so June to September works well for both.
Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos in 1835, and today 97% of the islands’ land is protected as a national park. That is why every visit to a park site must be made with an authorized naturalist guide, on marked trails, keeping at least 6 feet (2 m) from the animals even when a curious sea lion comes closer.
