Machu Picchu Circuit 1B: The Upper Terraces Route

Machu Picchu Circuit 1B: The Upper Terraces Route

One of the most famous and spectacular places on earth is Machu Picchu, the ancient Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

With up to ten different circuits, Machu Picchu is divided into four main routes in order to improve your time at the ruins. Each circuit offers a different experience of the location, which leads to a unique time at the magical ruins.

Circuit 1B, the Upper Terraces route, is particularly interesting due to its expansive vistas and inspiring insights into the past. So let’s begin and learn more about this route!

Why Choose The Upper Terraces Route?

If you visit Machu Picchu circuit 1, you can choose between four different routes. They all offer access to the upper terraces and some include additional hikes to Machu Picchu Mountain, Sun Gate Intipunku or the Inca Bridge.

Choosing the Upper Terraces route (circuit 1B) at Machu Picchu provides an unforgettable and enriching experience. Wide-ranging views of the historic citadel, the verdant Urubamba River Valley, and the surrounding Andean peaks can be seen on this well-known route.

Access to important historical buildings like the Guardian house, where you can look at the creativity of Incan engineering, is another benefit of circuit 1B.

The Upper Terraces route will allow you to take breathtaking pictures while on a short but rewarding tour.

Physical and Logistical Considerations

Ventures on Circuit 1B are moderately difficult and should only be undertaken if you are reasonably fit. Although the route itself is not overly strenuous, some people may find the altitude and uneven terrain challenging, so it’s wise to explore other Machu Picchu circuits if this one isn’t suitable for you.

The tour typically lasts 2 hours, depending on your pace and the amount of time spent at various historical sites and viewpoints.

The ideal time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season from May through September, when clear skies offer perfect conditions for sightseeing and photography. However, the weather in the Andes can change suddenly, so be prepared for anything by packing a rain jacket and wearing layers to adjust to fluctuating temperatures.

Keep in mind that circuit 1B has limitations, such as no access to the lower terraces and some expansive areas of Machu Picchu. For a more comprehensive experience, consider combining this route with Circuit 3B, also known as the Royalty Route.

Permits and Tickets

In the peak months from June 1st to October 15th and December 30th to 31st, Machu Picchu can accommodate up to 5,600 visitors each day. With 4,500 visitors per day, the limit is slightly lower during the other months of the year. The fact that the Machu Picchu Upper Terraces route can only handle 300 tickets per hour means that you will have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Given the daily limitations for each circuit and Machu Picchu’s popularity, it is best to purchase your tickets well in advance, particularly during the peak season from May to September. A ticket for Machu Picchu Circuit 1B costs S/ 152 (around $40) for adults and S/ 70 (around $18) for kids from 3-17 years.
