VISITING

Machu Picchu

Hidden high in the Peruvian Andes, the Machu Picchu ruins are all that remain of a 15th-century Incan citadel. In its heyday, the ancient fortress was a royal complex of temples, plazas, palaces, and homes. Unlike many other Incan historic sites, the site was inhabited for just 80 years before being abandoned.

Thanks to the steep mountains surrounding the site, Machu Picchu wasn’t discovered by Spanish conquistadors. Evidence suggests that – even though the site remained uninvaded – it was likely abandoned due to the conquests taking place in other parts of the Incan empire.

Today, Machu Picchu is a mysterious icon of Incan civilization, as well as an architectural and engineering masterpiece. The site is a designated Peruvian Historical Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

If you’ve got the time, the most picturesque way of reaching Machu Picchu is by trekking along the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek. Both hikes are outstanding and feature mesmerizing sights, but for slightly less traffic and a more challenging route, check out the Salkantay Trek tour

If you don’t want to embark on a multi-day hike, you can visit Machu Picchu on a day tour. To make the most of your travels, consider a 2-day Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour. Once you’ve explored the Sacred Valley, you can take a scenic train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town), where you can enjoy a relaxed evening before embarking on your adventure to the famous citadel in the morning.
