Located in the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, Huchuy Picchu Mountain is a hidden gem just waiting to be found. Over the course of the past years, it has become more popular for travelers looking for adventures off the beaten path.

In this blog post, we will look at everything you need to know about Huchuy Picchu when planning your trip to Machu Picchu.

What is Huchuy Picchu Mountain?

Nestled in the Peruvian Andes Mountains, Huchuy Picchu Mountain, also known as “Little Picchu,” is a lesser-known but equally fascinating peak. Despite being overshadowed by Machu Picchu, it’s more well-known counterpart, Huchuy Picchu has its own significance and charm.

This ancient site, which has terraced fields, ceremonial buildings, and residential areas, is thought to have been a royal estate for Inca royalty.

It provides you with a more private and peaceful experience than the other two mountains, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, because of its remote location and smaller size.

Huchuy Picchu mountain is located north of the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, next to the famous Huayna Picchu mountain. It is an essential part of the Machu Picchu complex, providing you with an exciting tour of this mountain.

The closest town is Aguas Calientes, sometimes referred to as Machu Picchu Pueblo. It is an area that sits ideally on the banks of the Urubamba River, next to Machu Picchu.

How to Get to Huchuy Picchu?

Most visitors arrive in Aguas Calientes by train from Ollantaytambo or Poroy. The other option is to trek the famous Inca Trail for two or four days.

After arriving in Aguas Calientes, you can choose to hike for 60 to 90 minutes or take a quick 20-minute bus ride to Machu Picchu’s entrance. Although the hike provides a more immersive experience, we advise taking the bus, as the trail is rather unspectacular and you might arrive sweaty and exhausted.

Once you are at the entrance, use the lower gates for Machu Picchu Circuit 3, to enter Huchuy Picchu Mountain, which is approximately 25 meters from the main citadel entrance.

Huayna Picchu and Huchuy Picchu have identical entrances. There will be a path split a few meters beyond the checkpoint; stay left to start the climb to Huchuy Picchu. You have to hike only 1 kilometer to reach the highest point of Huchuy Picchu. The Incas built these stone pathways.

The Best Time to Visit Huchuy Picchu Mountain

Due to its high altitude in the Andes Mountains, Huchuy Picchu Mountain as well as the famous Machu Picchu has a diverse climate. The dry season and the rainy season are the two main periods that these sites experience.

In the dry season, which typically runs from May to October, the entire area with Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains tends to be more explored. The clear and sunny weather offers the perfect setting for the visit of these sites.

On the other hand, greater rainfall and the potential for muddy trails and unsafe conditions come with the rainy season, which runs from November to April. The benefit is that you will face less travelers, but you should plan for unpredictable weather during this period of the year.
